Early Man made up most of their bio. They said they came from a strict Penecostal background and were expelled for listening to satanic music like Judas Priest. In reality the members had a long background in indie rock bands. Lots of metalheads hated them for it, but for me these kind of mystifications are an essential part of rock ‘n’ roll. And if they hadn’t had their indie background Early Man could have never come up with the wonderfully fragile “I’m losing my mind on the inside / I’m losing my mind on the outside” part, which makes this song an absolute classic.

This track of the first Chronics album Soulshaker is even less popular than Hot Blood Boy: 17 plays of which 7 by me. And that while it confirms my empirical observation that songs with the word ‘shake’ in the title are always good.

Soulshaker and Make You Move were released within a year. The Chronics were on a roll in the early part of the century. In the sixties and seventies it was usual to release more than one album a year. Bands that had artistic momentum of made a string of good records in a short period of time. They should start doing that again.

The Chronics - Hot Blood Boy

This track had 33 plays by 9 listeners on Last.fm at the moment I’m typing this. It’s from their 2001 album Make You Move. Last.fm was founded in 2002. So Hot Blood Boy averaged about 4.13 plays a year worldwide over the last 8 years. No wonder The Chronics disappeared of the face of the earth after the release of this album.

But I love The Chronics and I love this track, so if you were in The Chronics: it wasn’t all for nothing. Thanks for the great music!
